Hey, who wants to go to Ft Worth with me? October 19? We can go to this awesome thing at the Modern Art Museum - "Modern til Midnight". It features the hyperrealist sculptures of Ron Mueck, and abstract paintings of four post-WWII artists who really expanded the world of abstract art. Also, St Vincent is playing a show there! Right at the museum. I saw her open for Arcade Fire in May, and she's something else. There was a birdcage onstage for her performance, and I'm pretty sure that's where the chirping noises were coming from for one of her songs. It was delightful. If that's not enough of a draw, current indie dear Peter and the Wolf (and his "junk orchestra") will be opening.

Cooooome on! Texas, guys! Art! Music! Wonderfulness!

Check out this submission to Radar Film Festival from Will Perrens and Jenny Cobden, and try not to smile. (Not possible!) So many things to love here! The cardboard set, the cut-out props, the actors' expressions...the silliness! These guys must've worked their butts off pulling this thing together (and apart). Great song choice too.

Thanks to Gabriel for showing me this a few months ago.

Edit: Oops, both the filmmakers' sites are down. Here's a lesser-quality youtube version.

a jedi's strength flows through the power of caffeine! er, the force.

They didn't give their names. They only stated their cause.

"To fulfill the dreams of children with terminal illnesses."

I asked them why. Why Jedi Knights? Why now?

They didn't seem at all phased by the fact they'd waltzed into Spot Coffee on a crowded Thursday evening, cloaked and wielding lightsabers. They were actually pretty comfortable, and, dare I say, cool? with it. Their leader (far right, obscured by lightsaber action) explained to me they were collecting money for a charity they've supported and have worked for in the past. It's the local take on the Make-a-Wish foundation, the Dream Factory of Rochester, Inc. I wasn't totally clear on whether or not they were exploiting their status as guardians of peace in the galaxy, but since I have a soft spot for charities such as these (and he had an honest face!) I made a little contribution.

It's really too bad we couldn't do that for NYPIRG this summer. Not everyone cares about stopping mercury poisoning, but most people care about helping Jedi Knights. Dammit.

secret wall tattoos

Secret Wall Tattoos is an "anarchy art" project bringing interesting hidden paintings to hotel rooms, public restrooms, and hallways near you. The object is to find a neatly-hung painting in a public place and leave a secret painting the same dimensions as the frame, right on the wall behind it. It's not clear to me if this is one person doing all the artwork, or a small group of artists, but you can see on the myspace page that many others are being inspired to follow suit. Fun stuff!

communication flower

Before I drop off to sleep tonight, I present you with the one thing I want for my next birthday (you have a little over 3 1/2 months): the Communication Flower! Fully equipped to chat with you in 200 different languages, the plastic pixie and human duo will finally bridge the communication gap between you and your houseplants. "When it touches the flower and the leaf, in order for flattery to interpret the word which the fairy gets wise, it speaks." I, for one, am in dire need of this. Every houseplant I've tried to keep has died a dry, dusty, and forgotten death. If I had these guys to help me out, I'm sure I could work out a healthy relationship with my next potted plant.
